Adrenal Crisis Training

Adrenal Crisis is a life-threatening medical emergency that can occur in anybody who is steroid dependent.Emergency treatment for adrenal crisis can be life-saving but it is more complex than other emergency treatments as it involves preparing and administering an intramuscular (IM) hydrocortisone injection.Healthcare support workers supporting somebody who is steroid dependent should therefore be appropriately trained and competent to recognise adrenal crisis and administer emergency treatment safely.

From a medication management and clinical governance perspective, organisations supporting a steroid dependent person should also have:An IM hydrocortisone policy
A personalised emergency procedure or care plan
A competency assessment process for staff administering treatment
Because IM injections are considered a specialist administration technique, best practice recommendations include:Annual adrenal crisis awareness training
6-monthly competency reviews for staff administering IM hydrocortisone
